What you believe about yourself shapes your thoughts, emotions, actions, and ultimately, your results. But here’s the thing—even if your mindset is solid, progress can hit a wall if your core beliefs aren’t aligned with your goals. That’s why I created a breakthrough technique called “Borrowing Belief.” It’s a powerful way to elevate traditional visualization by adding the emotional depth needed to reprogram your subconscious mind for success.

WHY BELIEF IS THE PARAMOUNT

As the legendary psychologist Dr. Albert Bandura said, “Self-belief does not necessarily ensure success, but self-disbelief assuredly spawns failure.” Your belief system is the bedrock of your confidence and resilience, driving you to tackle challenges head-on and achieve your goals.

But here’s the catch—your beliefs don’t come out of nowhere. They’re shaped by your past experiences, the environment you’ve grown up in, and the people and influences around you. These factors can plant limiting beliefs that act as invisible barriers, keeping you from realizing your full potential.

To overcome those barriers, you need to rewrite the mental scripts that hold you back. That’s where “Borrowing Belief” can help you bridge the gap.

A POWER BOOST FOR VISUALIZATION

You’ve probably heard about the power of visualization—it’s a cornerstone of peak performance coaching. Research published in the journal Neuropsychologia shows that mental imagery activates the same neural pathways as physically performing a skill. That means your brain processes imagined success in much the same way as real success.

But here’s the problem: traditional visualization often misses one crucial element—emotional depth. It’s not enough to see yourself succeeding. You need to feel what success looks and feels like. This is where my “Borrowing Belief” method comes into play, and it’s been delivering incredible results for my clients.

HOW “BORROWING BELIEF” WORKS

Here’s the step-by-step breakdown of this method:

  1. Identify a Role Model Think of someone you deeply admire—an athlete, leader, or mentor who you believe can perform at the level you aspire to reach.

  2. Visualize Their Excellence Picture this person performing the skill or task you want to master. Watch how they move, handle pressure, and execute with confidence and grace.

  3. Feel Their Confidence As you visualize, notice your belief in their abilities. It’s likely a 10 out of 10—you have zero doubts about their success.

  4. Step Into Their Shoes Gradually, place yourself in their position. Imagine your head in their body, wearing their uniform, and performing in their environment. Then, transition to seeing yourself fully in the role. Replace their uniform with yours and their environment with the setting where you’ll perform next.

  5. Own the Belief By the end of this exercise, you’ll have transferred the belief you had in your role model’s success to yourself. You’ll feel the same confidence and certainty that they exude.

WHY “BORROWING BELIEF” WORKS

Here’s the secret: this method taps into your creative subconscious. Your subconscious processes emotions and experiences to build your mental reality. When you pair visualization (using all five senses)  with the emotional power of belief, you reprogram your brain to see success as achievable and inevitable.

Dr. Joe Dispenza, an expert in neuroscience and personal transformation, explains, “When you combine a clear intention with an elevated emotion, you signal new genes in new ways.” This means that by adding authentic feelings of confidence to your visualizations, you’re literally rewiring your brain to create new possibilities. 

The challenge for most of us is that we have trouble feeling the emotion of confidence in certain situations or around certain abilities (especially when we are advancing into unknown territory and new skills and abilities. This is what we are doing when coaching peak performance- going to unchartered waters and owning them.
